Carleton Place Drama Team Participates at Provincial Showcase
|
The Carleton Place High School Drama Team represented their school and the Upper Canada District School Board well at the provincial level of the National Theatre School Drama Festival – Ontario (formerly known as the Sears Drama Festival). In addition to the Excellence of Production award given to each group for making it to the top level, the Carleton Place student’s comedic performance and overall presence won them an award for “theatrical joy.” It went to a single team that showed true happiness and positivity throughout their production and time at the competition.
“The adjudicator said she just felt such a loving, supportive, and positive energy being in the room with us,” said the school’s drama teacher and coach Heather Mortimer.
The cast played off the audience and each other while on stage, earning them a standing ovation. They continued to support each other well after the curtain closed.
On their journey to provincials the group was one of two that claimed an Outstanding Production award at the Ontario East Region competition, which gave them access to the provincial showcase. Student Director Shamus Merkley earned an Award of Excellence for his work at this show, and Kristian Johnson also received an Award of Excellence for his acting skills.
At the district level, the group won an Outstanding Production award with Johnson, Merkley and Hailey Lafleur Belle all receiving individual Awards of Merit and Distinction. The costuming team also won an Award of Excellence at the district showcase.
