Open Roads Public School Fine Arts Program

Keewatin-Patricia District School Board’s Open Roads Public School in Dryden, Ontario faces a unique challenge when bringing the arts to life for their Fine Arts Program (an accelerated academic program for grades six to eight). An annual trip to Winnipeg exposes students to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and Manitoba Theatre for Young People through shows and participation in workshops. Back at home, partnerships with community groups and Dryden High School brings in world-class dancers, singers, actors, and musicians to work with the students. Educators also bring in local artists with a distinctly Northwestern Ontario flair, including Indigenous artists and Elders. Performances for the community are also important. What the students come away with are skills that help them throughout their lives, including public speaking, collaboration, time management, and musicality.
