District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) is committed to taking action towards reconciliation. The board is actively engaged in meaningful partnerships with local Indigenous communities and offers innovative programs and activities for students to deepen their understanding of Canada’s shared history.

DSB1 is proud to offer co-curricular learning opportunities for all students. In June 2019, the Indigenous Education Department organized the first Indigenous Culture Camp for interested secondary students, hosted by Northern College Porcupine Campus. Eighty students from across the board had the chance to participate in workshops over two days featuring traditional food preparation, grandfather drumming, goose hunt and harvest, beading, pow wow ceremonies, tamarack goose making and Cree language workshop. These workshops offered authentic learning opportunities and were facilitated by local elders and knowledge keepers. All students and staff were welcomed by the local cinema for an evening VIP screening of the critically acclaimed ‘The Grizzlies” followed by a smudge and sharing circle to ensure safety of al participants.

DSB1 ensures all students feel safe and accepted at their schools. With the ongoing support of the Indigenous Student Advisors (ISA), students at six secondary schools receive the support and encouragement they may require to graduate. The ISA team is fully aware of the needs of some of our students who identify as Indigenous and collaborate daily with school administrators, Student Success, Guidance, Child and Youth Workers, Attendance Counselors and community agencies to ensure our students strengths are valued and that they are supported in meaningful ways.

DSB1 will continue its ongoing, board-wide professional learning with Kevin Lamoureux for a third consecutive year. Our commitment to ensuring all DSB1 staff have a strong understanding of our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Canada is evident in the staff feedback as well as in the school based professional learning cycles. From K-12, we are seeing evidence of the work with Mr. Lamoureux in our schools and staff wanting to be part of the solution. We are proud to host Kevin back for our third Professional Activity Day on April 27, 2020.

DSB1 looks forward to continuing to offer innovative and meaningful learning opportunities for all students and staff in a spirit of reconciliation during the 2019-2020 school year and beyond.
